Why Real Leisure Really Matters: Incentive Effects on Real Effort in the Laboratory
نویسندگان
چکیده
On-the-job leisure is a pervasive feature of the modern workplace. We studied its impact on work performance in a laboratory experiment by either allowing or restricting Internet access. We used a 2×2 experimental design in which subjects completing real-effort work tasks could earn cash according to either individualor team-production incentive schemes. Under team pay, production levels were significantly lower when Internet browsing was available than when it was not. Under individual pay, however, no differences in production levels were observed between the treatment in which Internet was available and the treatment in which it was not. In line with standard incentive theory, individual pay outperformed team pay across all periods of the experiment when Internet browsing was available. This was not the case, however, when Internet browsing was unavailable. These results demonstrate that the integration of on-the-job leisure activities into an experimental labor design is crucial for uncovering incentive effects.

The Welfare Effects of Switching from Consumption Taxation to Inflation Taxation in Iran’s Economy
The net effects of switching from consumption taxation to inflation taxation on resource allocation and welfare crucially depend on production externalities. With elastic labor supply, raising inflation taxation decreases leisure, but increases the levels of real consumption, capital, and output. Moreover, this tax switch has two opposing effects on the level of real money balances: A positive ...
متن کاملDisentangling Incentive Effects from Sorting Effects: An Experimental Real-Effort Investigation
This study separates and compares sorting and incentive effects and analyses their contingencies in a real-effort laboratory experiment. Depending on the treatment, subjects have a choice between a piece rate, a budget-based and a fixed pay, or have no choice but are assigned to a compensation scheme. The results suggest that sorting effects have a greater impact on productivity than incentive ...

In designing the tax system in the housing and real estate sector, increasing the efficiency and optimal allocation of resources in the urban area, redistribution of income and wealth, reducing the incentive for speculation and increasing tax revenues of national and local governments should be considered. Accordingly, with the expansion of tax bases and reduction of exemptions, it is possible ...
متن کاملReal Effort, Real Leisure and Real-time Supervision: Incentives and Peer Pressure in Virtual Organizations
We propose a novel approach to the analysis of organizations by developing a computerized platform that reproduces relevant features of existing organizations such as real-effort tasks and real-leisure alternative activities (Internet). In this environment, we find strong incentives effects as organizations using individual incentives significantly outperform those relying on team incentives. C...
متن کاملDoes Principal-Agent Theory Work in Real Life?
We study the agency problem experimentally focusing on two issues that are central to its effectiveness. The first tests whether an incentive compatible direct revelation mechanism performs well when human agents are asked to report probabilistic information. The second addresses the principal’s lack of knowledge as to how types and effort levels relate to the final outcome. Our results reveal ...
